Using training packet or other sample student paper from another semester, choose a paper with "plagiarism." Select a paper where the student has copied some sentences directly from the articles provided with the prompt without any attempt at attribution.
Review the difference between quotating, paraphrasing and summarizing. Discuss the ideas presented by Purdue University's Online Writing Lab.
1. Give students both the article and the sample student paper. Ask students to highlight or underline the copied information.
2. Now, ask students to revise the first copied area and to quote effectively using strategies from the Preventing Accidental Plagiarism Activity.
3. Ask students to readaround in groups of three.
4. Ask students to share a few examples with the class. Comment on effective strategies.
5. Give students time to revise their writing.
3. Next, ask students to paraphrase the same selection. Repeat the above steps.
