Greater San Diego Council of Teachers of English
The Greater San Diego Council of Teachers of English (GSDCTE) is a local council of the California Association of Teachers of English (CATE) and an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). The GSDCTE Board is a group of educators selected to support and validate the profession by building a network of English language arts educators who communicate regularly, grow in professional knowledge and enthusiasm for teaching, and act on shared concerns. GSDCTE sponsors two conferences a year: Promising Practices and the Lake Arrowhead Retreat, several awards for teachers and administrators dedicated to supporting English language arts, the local level of a statewide writing contest for students grades 3 - college, and an annual awards dinner.

One Book One San Diego
In February and March 2007, San Diego Public Library and KPBS are partnering to present One Book, One San Diego. One Book, One San Diego is an open invitation during the month of February/March 2007 for everyone who lives, works or visits San Diego to read and discuss the same book. The One Book, One San Diego campaign will promote an appreciation for reading and encourage discussion about books and important issues to our community. One Book, One City first orginated in Seattle in 1998. Since that time, 344 cities nationwide have undertaken similar campaigns: http://www.loc.gov/loc/cfbook/one-book.html. The Library's goal is to enlist the participation of 200,000 San Diegans in One Book, One San Diego.
San Diego's inaugural One Book, One San Diego selection is a significant book entitled "Enrique's Journey" by Sonia Nazario. The choice of "Enrique's Journey" was a collaborative effort among Library staff, educators, KPBS staff and other community members. Soon to be turned into an HBO dramatic series, Enrique's Journey is Nazario's account of a 17-year-old Honduran boy's harrowing search to find his mother in America. The story won two Pulitzer prizes when it first appeared as a series of articles in the Los
Angeles Times. Greatly expanded with fresh research, the book vividly conveys the experience of illegal immigration from Central America. "Enrique's Journey" is also a story about family and love that everyone can relate to.San Diego Public Library and KPBS will present television and radio programming, workshops, lectures, and discussion groups. The author, Sonia Nazario will speak at KPBS on March 8, 2007. These events will offer individuals and families the opportunity to join together to read "Enrique's Journey" and engage in lively conversation and an exchange of ideas. Copies of "Enrique's Journey" will be available at the San Diego Public Library, local bookstores and from online booksellers.
